CHARACTER NAME: Nick Valentine
CANON: Fallout 4
TIMELINE: Pre-game/ before meeting Sole Survivor
AGE: 100+
REFERENCE: https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Nick_Valentine
PERSONALITY:
Nick Valentine’s appearance gives the misconception he is a mechanical man masquerading as a hard boiled noir detective. He is a Synth; A literal synthetic human, but the sum of his artificial parts do not make him any less authentic. Nick is one of the realist people the Sole Survivor crosses in the Commonwealth despite his fabricated being.
A major portion of his personality has to do with the original Nick Valentine and provides the source to this Nick’s dilemma. In conversation with the Survivor, he laments he does not know when the original ends and he begins referring to the imprinted memories that make him, him. From his perspective, Nick remembers signing up for the experiment at C.I.T. and then waking in a pile of rubble as a Synth. This presents him with a dilemma of how he distinguishes himself from the original.
Furthermore there are glimpses and flashes of the original Nick’s life still lingering making it harder to live as his own being. It is not a debilitating dilemma for the Synth detective and Nick realizes he has everything due to the original. From his moral compass, to how he speaks, and even his name are all taken from this pre-war detective.
The original in Nick’s words was “...a hell of a cop, a guy with good instincts, and a good heart.” Nick is aware and appreciative of the origin of his personality, but by the same token it is a reminder of what he is; a Synth. These things however do not make Nick any less human in how he acts.
He emotes and has clear expressive capability. The construction is different, but his reactions are genuine in emotional scope. Random NPCs are spoken to recalling past cases and inquiring how they have been. More pressing is the interactions with the Sole Survivor. His reactions and friendship level is dependent on the player's actions. These actions earn responses in the game display the wide range of emotion scope Nick has despite being machine.
Nick is a firm believer in doing the right thing. The Commonwealth is a ruthless place, yet in his eyes there is no excuse to toss one’s moral compass aside. The first people he encountered in the wasteland in his Synth body once they got passed their suspicion treated him with kindness. In Nick’s words, “Those people, they treated me like a human being. I've been trying to return the favor ever since.”
Among doing the right thing is proper justice. Nick is not a vigilante out for blood. He believes in justice and sometimes that means taking justice in one’s own hands. Petty crimes may irritate him, but it is purposeless cruel violence that he hates most. The very people who opened arms in meeting him first fell victim to this type of violence, something he grants no excuse for when those people were able to carve an existence in the wasteland without resorting to violence.
He knows there are times violence is the only choice, however he takes no glee from engaging in such acts. Approval is spoken of after in terms of people defended and preventative measures taken, not the violence done. It is still about doing the right thing, even when he has to put up his fist and get a little dirty.
If his foray into occasional fisticuffs and shootouts is one third his noir detective motif, then another third is met with his sharp wit. Nick has a talent in talking, the sort of dialog one expects from a detective of his type. He can get sarcastic, even scathing at times, but he is not mean. He pokes fun at himself too aware his appearance is off putting to many.
The last third comes as intelligence. Various quotes are drawn from books and his unique talent as a companion is hacking. Nick is no slouch in the intelligence department and can get a good bead on people in a short conversation.
With Nick, what you see is what you get. He does not have multiple masks or caveats to his personality. He is an old cop dedicated to doing the right thing. A wit filled detective keen to details. He is a good person, just made from bolts and wire instead of flesh and blood.
ABILITIES:
>/Synth: Nick is a Synth, or Synthetic human, which has some benefits. He does not require sleep, air, or food to survive. The metalwork that makes up his frame grants him durability and a mean punch. All five senses are accounted for and sharp. Anything that disrupts organic senses have no effect on him. He even has a built in Geiger counter.
The downside is he looks uncanny. Internal mechanisms can be seen from his old wounds, including his exposed skeletal right hand. The plastic like skin does not help, but over all he is better than human in terms of durability, strength, and reach of senses.
>/Detective: The original Nick was a detective and this one is too. He is within the Commonwealth a respected detective to the point people look past him being a Synth. He is good at snooping and getting a decent idea of what makes a person tick with enough time.
He has a knack with people in general thanks to some latent charisma ability. Above average shot with a variety of weapons from canon proper and can handle himself well in a fist fight by talent (and having a metal skeleton).
>/Hacking: Capable hacker with some understanding about coding and encryption. His Synth 'mind' makes these task a tad easier to run, although he is use to working on a physical computer.
PERSONAL EFFECTS:
>/ Faded trench coat with shirt, pants, and tie.
>/ Worn fedora
>/ .45 caliber pipe revolver, bullets
>/ Pack of cigarettes
>/ Screwdriver
PRIZED POSSESSION: Ring given by the original Nick to his fiancée Jennifer Lands.
CRAU PREMISE: None
